چکیده

1604 Emerging Infectious Diseases • www.cdc.gov/eid • Vol. 12, No. 10, October 2006 codes observed in this study suggests that in hospitals where influenza testing is routinely performed, most patients whose hospitalization summary includes an influenza-specific ICD-9 code actually have influenza. However, misclassification of patients with parainfluenza and H. influenzae infections as patients with influenza demonstrates the potential for systematic coding errors even when influenza testing is routine. Epidemiologists and public health officials should be aware that influenza-specific ICD-9 codes assigned in a setting of routine rapid diagnostic testing may be useful for following trends. However, these codes will substantially underestimate the actual number of influenza-related hospitalizations.

A large-scale stochastic spatiotemporal model for Aedes albopictus-borne chikungunya epidemiology

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans primarily via the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes. The virus caused a major epidemic in the Indian Ocean in 2004, affecting millions of inhabitants, while cases have also been observed in Europe since 2007. We developed a stochastic spatiotemporal model of Aedes albopictus-borne chikungunya transmission based on our recently developed envi...

A fatal case of chikungunya virus infection with liver involvement.

Recovery from chikungunya is previously considered universal and mortality due to the virus is rare and unusual. Findings from recent chikungunya outbreaks occurred in Reunion Island and India have since challenged the conventional view on the benign nature of the illness. Malaysia has experienced at least of 4 outbreaks of chikungunya since 1998. In the present on-going large outbreak due to c...

Northward movement of East Central South African genotype of Chikungunya virus causing an epidemic between 2006-2010 in India.

INTRODUCTION Re-emergence of chikungunya virus in South India after a gap of 32 years in 2006 affected over a million people in the Indian subcontinent. We kept a close vigil over the emerging trend of this virus between 2006-2010 with a view to establish the identity of the circulating genotype(s) and to determine the route of virus transmission in different parts of India. METHODOLOGY Nucle...

The Native Wolbachia Symbionts Limit Transmission of Dengue Virus in Aedes albopictus

BACKGROUND The chikungunya (CHIK) outbreak that struck La Reunion Island in 2005 was preceded by few human cases of Dengue (DEN), but which surprisingly did not lead to an epidemic as might have been expected in a non-immune population. Both arboviral diseases are transmitted to humans by two main mosquito species, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. In the absence of the former, Ae. albopictus...

Chikungunya infection: six years after, rheumatic morbidity and impaired quality of life persist!

In 2008, a self-questionnaire was sent to the same persons, 403 responded, 101 were CHIK +. The latter presented higher frequency of rheumatic disorders and significantly lower qualit...

Chikungunya Virus Infection during Pregnancy, Réunion, France, 2006

Mother-to-child transmission of chikungunya virus was reported during the 2005-2006 outbreak on Reunion Island, France. The study population was composed of 1,400 pregnant women (628 uninfected, 658 infected during pregnancy, 27 infected before pregnancy, and 87 infected on u...
